Water damage in bathrooms

For the obvious reasons bathrooms are prone to a water damage. Even in a newer construction water damage my accrue due to incorrect fixtures installation, poor workmanship and water leakage. It doesn't take long for a water to penetrate through a subfloor and a ceiling drywall below. Non then less pinpointing a source of leakage might be difficult without farther investigation.

The usual weak points are near tub spout, shower valve flange, shower corners or drain to shower liner connection.
Although a small leak may seams like a minor imperfection over a time it may grow to a serious issue.

Here is an example of a six years old shower with a small leakage issue.

A tinny crack in a calking bead help to create a perfect home for a nest of insects and permanently damage subfloor as well as shower surrounding framing. Incorrect installation of an acrylic shower base and lack of a waterproofing system required a complete renovation.

Next, rebuilding/renovating of a shower stall and installation of a waterproofing system. In this case a prefabricated, ready to tile shower base was used. An advantage of this solution is possibility of using a standard shower drain. This increases finishing combinations and helps to match drain with shower valve trim. Just another step in custom bathroom renovation.

Finally, finished shower stall with a new shower system by Grohe. Porcelain tiles are as always a preferred choice for a shower walls and base. Smaller, shower base tiles follow the slope easer. Minimum slope for a shower base is ¼ “ per foot. A prefabricated, ready to tile shower base meets this requirement without need of using a semi-dry sandmix. Existing, custom shower glass enclosure was reinstalled to complete the process of bathroom renovation.
